Welcome to the Course on “Cloud Computing and Communication Protocols for Next-Generation Smart Grids”. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of smart grid communication technologies, cybersecurity, privacy protection, and cloud computing services used in modern power systems. It covers smart grid communication requirements, standards, architectures, wired and wireless communication technologies, communication networks, security challenges, threat and risk assessment, resilience mechanisms, and cloud-based smart grid applications. The course also introduces cloud computing architecture and deployment models supported with case studies such as cloud-based demand response, load balancing, dynamic pricing, energy meter management, and virtual power plant applications in contemporary smart grid infrastructures. Objectives By the end of this course, you will be able to: • Develop a comprehensive understanding of communication requirements, standards, and architectures used in smart grid systems. (BL2) • Understand the operation and applications of various wired and wireless communication technologies used in smart grid environments. (BL3) • Analyze smart grid communication networks, communication pathways, and information exchange mechanisms between smart grid domains. (BL4) • Illustrate the layered architecture, Open System Interconnection (OSI) model, and TCP/IP model used in smart grid communication systems. (BL3) • Evaluate the performance, reliability, scalability, and applicability of different communication technologies for smart grid applications. (BL4) • Understand cybersecurity challenges, threat assessment techniques, resilience mechanisms, and security frameworks used in smart grid communication networks. (BL3) • Develop an understanding of cloud computing concepts, service models, deployment models, and cloud-based smart grid applications. (BL2) • Evaluate the role of communication, cybersecurity, and cloud computing technologies in enabling reliable, scalable, secure, and intelligent smart grid operation. (BL4) This course focuses on communication infrastructure, cybersecurity mechanisms, and cloud-enabled services required for modern smart grid implementation. It covers smart grid communication standards, advanced networking technologies, secure data exchange, privacy protection, cloud integration, and intelligent grid management practices used in contemporary power systems. The course also discusses practical aspects of smart grid communication networks, interoperability standards, cybersecurity challenges, AMI security, threat mitigation techniques, and cloud-based smart grid applications through conceptual discussions and practical case studies. To successfully complete this course, learners should have basic knowledge of electrical engineering, communication systems, computer networks, and power system fundamentals. Familiarity with smart grid concepts and modern communication technologies will be beneficial. By enrolling in this course, participants will gain technical knowledge and practical insights applicable to smart grid communication systems, cybersecurity frameworks, and cloud-enabled power system applications, making it suitable for both students and industry professionals.
