This course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of electrical power systems from traditional grid networks to modern smart grid technologies. The course covers the history and development of electric power systems in India, conventional power generation, transmission and distribution practices, grid interconnections, Power System Control Centers (PSCC), smart grid architecture, domains, functionalities, reliability concepts, and national and international smart grid initiatives adopted in modern power systems. Objectives By the end of this course, you will be able to: • Develop a comprehensive understanding of traditional electrical power systems, grid interconnections, and the evolution of the national power grid in India. (BL2) • Understand the structure and operation of electric power systems, including Power System Control Centers (PSCC) and their role in grid management and control. (BL3) • Analyze the limitations and challenges of conventional electrical grids and evaluate the need for migration to smart grid systems. (BL4) • Illustrate the architecture, domains, services, and conceptual models associated with modern smart grid systems. (BL3) • Evaluate the key functionalities, components, and operational features of smart grids for reliable and efficient power system operation. (BL4) • Understand smart grid pilot projects, standards, mapping techniques, and national and international initiatives related to smart grid implementation. (BL3) This course provides a specialized focus on the transition from conventional electrical grids to modern smart grid systems used in contemporary power networks. The course stands out for its industry-oriented approach covering smart grid architecture, grid modernization, automation, reliability enhancement, and digital monitoring and control practices adopted in modern electrical power systems. Additionally, the course discusses practical aspects related to smart grid domains, power system control centers, grid interconnections, smart grid reliability, and pilot projects implemented in India and across the world. Learners will gain both theoretical knowledge and application-oriented understanding through conceptual discussions, practical case studies, and real-world smart grid implementation scenarios. To be successful in this course, you should have a background in basic electrical engineering principles, including knowledge of power systems, transmission and distribution systems, electrical machines, and control systems.
